FOB PROSPERITY, Iraq (News Service, Oct. 16, 2006) - In the early hours of the morning, a soldier wakes to the sound of an internal communications radio as a sharp voice thundering over the radio tells the leader to gather his men and be ready to move to southern Baghdad in less than 30 minutes.
Fifteen minutes later, about 14 combat-ready soldiers positioned their armored vehicles with their weapons at the ready on the steel towers. Soldiers stand ready to salute the brigade commander before leaving the safe haven of a small forward operating base on the edge of the international zone.
This is the life of the Soldiers who make up the Personal Security Section teams of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division in Baghdad.
Two 14-member teams ensure the safe and timely transportation of the brigade command team: Col. Michael Beech and Command Sgt. Maj. John Moody. The job requires being on standby 24 hours a day.

"I couldn't do what I do without them," Moody said. "They take personal responsibility to get me where we need to be, and when I get out of the vehicle, they're like those guys who take care of the president — the Secret Service."
Not a day goes by that the two teams—consisting of infantry, cavalry scouts, tankers, and military police—don't see the highways of the bustling Iraqi city, either on patrol with units of the 4th BCT or taking command of a group to various meetings and ceremonies in central and southern Baghdad. .
"The PSD team is tasked with providing security to the (commander) and the command sergeant major for any and all missions and encounters within the Multinational Division - Baghdad and 4th BCT area of operations," said Sgt.. 1st Class Daniel Cardona, PSD Petty Officer, 4th. BCT.
The soldiers who make up the PSD command teams were selected four months before the deployment last December, Cardona said. Not sure how well the soldiers would work together, he sent the two teams for two weeks of initial training.

"From the day PSD was created, it was kind of put together," said Cardona, a 15-year veteran from Alice, Texas. "All of the Soldiers came from different units and backgrounds, so the training gave me early assessments of what they needed to improve as a cohesive security unit."
The training included a two-week course that included convoy escort procedures, protective tactics for top dignitaries and security procedures when command personnel move through a combat zone, Cardona added.
After the training, Cardona designated two leaders who are now designated team leaders for the two PSD teams: Staff Sgt. Bradley Hoy, an infantryman from Llano, Texas, and Sgt. Jeffrey Rogers, a military police officer, from Buffalo, N.Y.
Both veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Hoy and Rogers comfortably took the leadership positions they were called upon to fill.

"Honestly, I don't think we could have done it without the leaders," he said. "They both stepped into an unfamiliar position and did an excellent job of leading their troops."
After four months of training, which included a three-week mission exercise at Fort Hood, Texas, the two teams deployed to Camp Buerhing, Kuwait in late November 2005, along with the rest of the brigade. So far, the teams have completed about 550 successful missions.
When not cruising the streets of Baghdad, crews can be found working on their Humvees in the fleet. If a new armor upgrade is available, there's no doubt it will be installed, said Spc. Alex Faiivae, command team gunner.
"We've installed just about everything in terms of armor upgrades that are available. We have to have the highest level of protection because we carry a colonel and a sergeant - and they have to be safe," said Faiivae, a native of Woodridge.. , Va.

Soldiers' schedules are sometimes so busy that sleep comes first, but that doesn't deter them, said Sgt. Gregory Thomson, Group Leader at Moody's PSD.
"The way our young Soldiers have grown into who they are today is incredible," said Thomson, a native of Oglesby, Ill. "When they're asked to do something, they do it and they're always focused on their mission. They've all grown into great soldiers."
