Although the force of the day was created in 1987, the protection of the president and the presidential family has always been the responsibility of the Armed Forces of the Philippines since 1897. At that time, a bodyguard was created to protect the first official president, Emilio Aguinaldo, from attempts on his life. In 1898, a presidential cavalry squadron, reinforced with a guard infantry company, was assembled to protect President Aguinaldo and his family. Like today's PSG, they wore the uniform of Rydals, but with straw shields. The commander of the unit was Major Geronimo Getmitan.

In 1936, the 1st Cavalry Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, established that year, was assigned to protect President Manuel Quezon, his family and the palace compound. In 1938, a guard company joined them to strengthen the protection of the president.

During World War II, units of the occupying Imperial Japanese Army initially took over the security of the palace, and then at the request of President Jose P. Laurel, they were replaced by the Philippine Guard Battalion. At the beginning of the war he, in turn, was replaced by the AFP Presidential Guard Battalion by order of President Sergio Osmani. Today's PSG begins in 1950, when President Elpidio Quirino established the Presidential Security Unit as a secret service and security unit for the presidency, the first family and the Malacañang Palace under the control of the Philippine National Police. (The Secret Service of the Malacañang Palace and later the Presidential Security Force and the Presidential Security Service and the Presidential Security Command).
